Summerville woman, 22, faces felony DUI after major crash

Police here in South Carolina take drunk driving arrests very seriously. This is, of course, because drunk driving does sometimes end tragically and various law enforcement authorities are tasked with preventing this. However, not everyone who is charged with a DUI deserves the consequences that come with a conviction, and even first-offense DUIs can result in severe penalties.

Lower level DUI cases that don't involve car accidents rarely make the news, but this does not mean these cases aren't important. It is, in fact, very important that even those who have clean records, who are arrested for a lower level DUI charge that is not even tied to an accident or injuries, take the charges very seriously--because prosecutors sure will.

A recent high profile case that was reported on in the media involves a Summerville woman was charged with felony DUI.

The 22-year-old woman was arrested last week after the car she was driving ran off of Interstate 26, ultimately hitting a retaining wall and flipping over before coming to a halt on Louise Drive in North Charleston.

A 27-year-old passenger in the vehicle was transported from the scene of the crash to a hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The driver has been charged with felony DUI.

Most people who have DUI charges are not up against felonies, but the stakes are still high. Any DUI charge can affect a person's career opportunities and reputation long after the case has been resolved.
