Man charged with two counts of felony DUI after car accident

Alleged acts of drunk driving that result in an accident can be unfortunate for everyone involved. When these accidents cause death or serious bodily injury, they often result in felony DUI charges for the driver who is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other substances at the time of the accident. The impact of a felony DUI on the life of the injured party and their family is tragic. However, the impact on the life of the alleged drunk driver can also be difficult and long-lasting.

A South Carolina man is facing two felony DUI charges after an accident that sent everyone involved in the accident, including the man facing DUI charges, to the hospital. The man was trying to pass a vehicle traveling in front of him. He accidentally struck the back of that vehicle causing it to strike a mailbox and tree and also flip over. The man then hit another vehicle. There were a total of seven people involved in the accident, and all were sent to the hospital to receive medical treatment.

Although no one was fatally injured, the two individuals in the vehicle that flipped were severely injured. Therefore, the man suspected of driving while intoxicated was charged with two counts of felony DUI for causing great bodily injury.

Situations like this should always be taken seriously. They can result in severe consequences for the drunk driver. However, when the driver has a prior record or multiple offenses involving driving while intoxicated, the consequences can become even more severe.

In this case, it is reported that the driver does indeed have a prior record. He was previously charged with DUI in 2008. He also has some additional criminal activity on his record dating back to 1993. Unfortunately, this did not bode well for the man in court. His bond was set at $60,000. When released he will be placed on house arrest and be required to wear an alcohol monitoring device. In addition, he will have to submit to random drug tests.

These types on consequences can have an extended, if not lifelong, impact on the accused. But, if the defendant focuses on developing a strong defense strategy, there may be a possibility for mitigation of consequences.
