South Carolina representative admits to facing DUI charges

When an individual is pulled over for drunk driving, the penalties can be life-changing. DUI charges can not only mean a criminal record with fines and license suspension, but these charges can also be threatening to the reputation of a person whose job entails being constantly in the public eye.

When public figures face charges for a DUI, they have the choice of trying to prevent their charges from leaking to the public or coming out and letting everyone know it happened. A South Carolina representative who was pulled over and charged with driving under the influence in October chose the former of the two and now the information has become public knowledge.

The man was pulled over last fall after a South Carolina football game. After refusing a breath test, his license was automatically suspended for six months. Fortunately, he was able to obtain his license after only a three month suspension. He has asked for a jury trial and it is unknown how he will plea in his case.

Unfortunately for the representative, this means that not only his DUI charges but also other minor matters of public record from his past have come to the forefront. For example, he also admitted that his license has been suspended in the past for failure to pay traffic tickets. In addition, he has had to refute a suspicion that he has been pulled over for drunk driving in the past. This is a truly unfortunate situation for him to face.

In many situations, understanding the laws and the defenses available can help a person through tough times such as these. They can help the accused make the best choices about the case in order to minimize reputation damage as well as criminal penalties resulting from the incident.
