Boy killed in DUI accident; family wants stricter DUI punishments

Previous postings in this blog have discussed how some families that have experienced the loss of a loved one due to the negligence of a drunk driver are lobbying for stricter DUI laws and tougher penalties for drunk drivers in South Carolina. Another family has stepped to the forefront of this argument after they lost their son recently in an accident involving a drunk driver.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 60-year-old man that was driving his vehicle along Old Barnwell Road struck another vehicle, leaving a 15-year-old boy with fatal injuries.

The 60-year-old man was charged with DUI and arrested after the accident. He was in court Saturday morning. The family of the 15-year-old boy was also in attendance in the courtroom that Saturday morning.

The judge set the 60-year-old driver's bond at $100,000 for his DUI charge and $15,000 for possession of a controlled substance. The family of the boy who was fatally injured argues this is too lenient. The claim that $100,000 bond for a fatal DUI accident is an injustice. They are, in turn, asking for more troopers on the roads and more funding for public safety.

It is very unfortunate when one mistake can lead to such a tragic outcome. But it is possible that this was simply a mistake and should a mistake be punishable by consequences that are even more severe than what this man may already face, potentially including jail time, monetary fines, alcohol rehabilitation classes and more? Some would argue he is already facing enough hardship.

This is a very difficult time for the family of the young boy and nothing can bring back a lost loved one. However, it is likely that the man who has been charged with a crime is also feeling fearful of what will come next. In South Carolina, convictions for drunk driving are already accompanied by steep penalties. These potential penalties are already severe enough that it is very important that any driver facing a DUI charge enlist the assistance of an experienced drunk driving defense team.
