St. Patrick's Day In Charleston: What Drivers Need To Know

Ready to celebrate St. Paddy's Day in Charleston? Check out these facts about the holiday before you go out, and remember to make responsible choices while you're having fun!

It's Not Even The Most Popular Drinking Holiday?

While most people associate St. Patrick's Day with drinking, it's only the fourth most popular drinking holiday in the United States. It falls behind New Year's Eve, Christmas and Independence Day/the Fourth of July. And that's just official holidays - it doesn't account for other days that see heavy drinking, such as Super Bowl Sunday.

What does this mean? While there is definitely an uptick in alcohol consumption on St. Patrick's Day, it's reputation as the booziest holiday is not deserved.

More Than A Wee Bit O' Irish In The Charleston Area

Did you know that the Charleston area has a strong connection to the Irish? Mount Pleasant is so Irish that it places in the top 10 for cities in the U.S. whose residents have Irish ancestry (by percentage of total city population). Most other cities on the list appear in New England, especially in the Boston area.

This likely has law enforcement concerned that people will get behind the wheel after celebrating their Irish heritage and drinking some of the more than 13 million pints of Guinness that are consumed on St. Patrick's Day.

More Likely To See Police Than Leprechauns

Questions about DUI checkpoints this weekend? Check out our guide to checkpoints in South Carolina for more info.

The only thing you're guaranteed to see this weekend other than a sea of green clothing is a massively increased police presence. State and local law enforcement officers will be constantly on patrol, as well as stationed at checkpoints throughout the area. This rise in law enforcement activity is expected to last through the entire weekend. Police are also expected to be extra vigilant on Friday night (the night of St. Patrick's Day) and into the early morning hours of Saturday (March 18th), when almost one-third of fatal crashes involve alcohol.

If you're planning to partake in the festivities this weekend, be safe and responsible. And remember that if you or a loved one get arrested, it could be due to overzealous law enforcement or a sobriety test that was not properly administered or calibrated. I this happens to you, don't leave your future up to the luck of the Irish; call us as soon as possible after your arrest so that we can start protecting your rights immediately.
