Our Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina Office

Our main office is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Mount Pleasant is the fourth largest city in South Carolina and has a population of roughly 86,000 people. Mount Pleasant is a fast growing suburban community, having doubled in population in the late 1990s. It is the fourth largest municipality and largest town in the state.

A Rich History

Our community has a rich military and maritime history, wonderfully displayed by the naval and maritime museum on Patriots Point at the foot of the Arthur Ravenal Bridge that links Mount Pleasant with Charleston (the site of a branch office for our firm). The USS Yorktown museum ship offers locals and visitors alike a wonderful way to experience a real World War II aircraft carrier.

The area that is now Mount Pleasant was originally settled by the Sewee tribe, with the area’s first white settlers arriving in 1680. Area residents were victorious in fighting off French invaders in the “Abcaw” area after withstanding several attacks from the Spanish and French in the 1700s.

South Carolina’s state constitution first went into effect in 1791 after Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas were home to Revolutionary War battles including a group of 453 men under the leadership of Colonel William Moultrie holding off the British Royal Navy in 1776. This was considered a major boost for the American cause in the early days of the war.

Prior to the Civil War, Mount Pleasant was the setting for the first secession resolution passed in the state. Mount Pleasant was home to many additional developments during the Civil War, including the training of the H.L. Hunley’s submarine crew that went on to sink the USS Housatonic in 1864.

The Mount Pleasant Historic District is a 30-block historic area recognized for its historical and architectural importance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Old Village Historic District is a 37-block area that incorporates the 30-block Mount Pleasant Historic District. It exists with the purpose of protecting, preserving and enhancing our town’s historical and architectural heritage. It’s a wonderful place to visit for a reminder of where we’ve been, what we’ve accomplished, and what we hope to achieve in the future as tight knit community.

The oldest surviving house in the area was built in 1759, serving as a reminder of the destruction of the Revolutionary Way, which resulted in a significant loss of the area’s original development.

Our People Are Our Strength

The people of Mount Pleasant are what makes the area such a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. As of the 2010 census, our local population is made up of people of a wide range of races, including White, African American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and more. The resulting melting pot has led to a wonderfully unique local culture, making significant contributions to our area’s vibrant food and music scenes.

Notable people who were born or live in Mount Pleasant include Super Bowl winning running back Travis Jervey, Medal of Honor recipient James E. Livingston, country performer and Hootie & The Blowfish front man Darius Rucker, and tennis player Shelby Rogers.

A Town On The Water

Like most communities in the greater Charleston region, water plays a significant role in our town’s geography. Mount Pleasant is separated from Charleston by the Cooper River, while Shem Creek and Town Creek are other significant bodies of water. The eight lane Arthur Ravenel Bridge — opened in 2005 to replace the aging Grace Memorial Bridge and Silas N. Pearman Bridge — is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the entire Western Hemisphere.

Mount Pleasant Recognized For Civil Excellence

Mount Pleasant was recognized in 2010 and 2018 as an All-America City by the National Civic League. According to the National Civic League, the award “recognizes communities that leverage civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness and innovation to successfully address local issues.”
