Charleston man faces DUI after crashing into BBQ barn

Sometimes, after a long day of work, a group of co-workers will go out to have a few drinks and unwind. Although this may seem like a harmless, relaxing get together, it is always important to be careful when consuming alcohol if getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is in the near future. Even if someone feels OK to drive, police may say otherwise and that can lead to drunk driving charges.

Earlier this month, a South Carolina man was charged with DUI after he crashed his truck into a barn at a local BBQ restaurant. Local authorities were contacted at around 2 a.m. after the accident occurred. According to authorities, the man driving the truck smelled of alcohol, but it is not clear whether they conducted a field sobriety or blood alcohol test.

The man told the officers that he had been at work and then went out to have a couple of drinks. The man also said that he believed another vehicle struck him and caused him to run into the barn.

In many cases, a routine traffic stop or an accident caused by another driver can quickly become much more severe and result in DUI charges. However, once someone finds himself or herself in this position, it is not impossible to turn the situation around. Obtaining a strong DUI defense is very important.

The usual penalties for drunk driving in South Carolina include an automatic driver's license suspension as well as additional short- and long-term consequences.

It is important for those facing criminal charges for drunk driving to understand that they have rights that must be upheld. They should not let themselves be intimidated by prosecutors or police officers. They are entitled to a defense. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
