Fatal accident leads to felony DUI charges for South Carolina man

A charge of driving under the influence is almost always a situation that can be difficult and must be handled very carefully in order to obtain the most beneficial outcome for the defendant. However, the most difficult DUI cases usually involve circumstances that go beyond a typical drunk driving charge. When the circumstances cause the situation to become aggravated, it can often result in felony DUI charges.

A felony DUI charge in South Carolina can result from a number of circumstances surrounding the drunk driving incident. Some of these circumstances may include the following:

  • A head-on collision
  • High blood alcohol content according to a breath test
  • Video showing poor field sobriety testing performance
  • Serious bodily injury of another individual involved in the crash
  • Death of another individual involved in the crash

A South Carolina man has been charged with felony DUI after his involvement in an accident that resulted in the death of passenger in another vehicle.

The collision occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Nov. 17. The man was driving southbound when his vehicle collided with another vehicle carrying six passengers in addition to the driver.

One of the passengers, a 16-year-old, was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The other six individuals were transported to a hospital.

The South Carolina man has been taken to a local detention center and charged with felony DUI. However, the accident is still under investigation.

The potential consequences of such felony DUI cases can be very severe and have a lifelong impact. However, when handled properly, some consequences can be mitigated in certain cases.
