Lexington County gives bars DUI toolkits to reduce drunk driving

Some residents of South Carolina may have heard of the group CAST. The letters stand for Community Action for a Safer Tomorrow. It is a DUI task force in Lexington County that is working to prevent drunk driving in South Carolina. One of their efforts includes the distribution of DUI toolkits to local bars over the next few months.

CAST is hoping that these toolkits, along with other efforts, will help to reduce the occurrence of drunk driving accidents.

The idea of these toolkits arose after the Lexington County Sheriff threatened to crack down on restaurant and bar owners that over-serve individuals, leading to drunk driving accidents. The toolkits contain buttons, signs, coasters and window decals with anti-drunk driving phrases and messages. In addition, bar owners and managers are being provided with logbooks to track alcohol-related issues at their establishments. A guidebook will also be issued with information about checking identification and the prevention of over-serving.

Bars and other establishments will be able to decide themselves whether they will utilize the DUI toolkits.

Although authorities and CAST are working together to enforce stricter penalties on restaurants and bars when it comes to over-serving, that does not mean that those facing DUI charges will be free from penalties.

It is important for South Carolina residents to understand the potential consequences of a DUI. These consequences may include license revocation, monetary fines and more depending upon the severity of the accident. Those that are facing DUI charges are often well-served to seek out a strong DUI defense.
