SC man faces DUI charges after fleeing scene of car accident

Previous posts here have discussing the potential damage to a person's reputation that can result from drunken driving charges. Although in most cases DUI charges only damage the reputation of the accused, that is not always the case. A recent case involving DUI charges in South Carolina may have the potential to damage the reputation of more than just the driver facing the charges.

A South Carolina Councilman's son was recently charged with drunk driving. The incident occurred just after midnight on a Sunday evening. Local police received a report about an accident that had occurred on a highway bypass. According to reports, a vehicle that was involved in the accident fled the scene.

After the accident, police pulled over a vehicle matching the description of the one that had allegedly left the scene of the accident. The vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old man who is also a Councilman's son. Upon pulling the vehicle over, police reported smelling alcohol on the driver's side of the vehicle. At that point they administered field sobriety tests on the driver. The driver did not pass the sobriety tests and was arrested. It is reported that his blood alcohol content was .14.

Situations such as this one are unfortunate for everyone involved. The driver that was pulled over said their vehicle was involved in the accident but that it was driven by his female passenger at the time and then he got behind the wheel after the fact. Is it possible he was just trying to help and the alcohol clouded his judgment causing him to make a mistake? Anything is possible.

It is important for those who find themselves these types of situations to immediately begin to develop a criminal defense strategy. The potential consequences may include license suspension and hefty monetary fines.
