Felony DUI charges for woman involved in two-car crash

Residents of South Carolina should always be cognizant of how much alcohol they are consuming if they are planning to drive somewhere afterward. However, accidents happen and sometimes people do not realize that they have had too much alcohol to drive. A driving under the influence charge can have a serious impact on the life of the accused.

However, when the decision to drive after drinking results in either severe bodily harm or death to another, the impact becomes incrementally more severe for both those that are injured and the driver who will likely face felony DUI charges. A woman from Summerville, South Carolina is facing a felony DUI charge after her involvement in a two-car accident that injured three people.

According to reports by authorities, they responded to an accident shortly after 8:00 p.m. on a Tuesday night. It is alleged that a 49-year-old woman was driving an SUV when she accidentally crossed the center line and struck another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The driver and the passenger of the other vehicle were injured.

When authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, they reported smelling alcohol on the SUV driver's breath. She was also reportedly "very unsteady" when she got out of the vehicle.

Situations like this are very unfortunate, and possibly tragic, for all parties involved. The driver may be dealing not only with recovering from the accident but also dealing with possible felony charges for their involvement in an accident.

However, those that are facing felony DUI charges should know that, even though they may face serious penalties, they have defense options. With the appropriate approach, a strong defense may be able to have the felony charges reduced to a misdemeanor, achieve an acquittal at trial, get the charges dropped or obtain an appellate victory.
