South Carolina teen charged with felony DUI after brother's death

Previous postings in this blog have discussed the severity of the consequences when a drunken driving accident results in severe bodily harm or death. However, most of those stories involved one party being charged with felony DUI for allegedly causing harm to another party that they did not know. It is important to note that this is not always the case. A South Carolina teen was recently killed in a car accident and his brother is being charged with felony DUI for the teen's death.

One of the boys, an 18-year-old, was driving a vehicle at around 2:00 AM in the morning. His 16-year-old brother was a passenger riding in the backseat. The boy was driving through a Columbia subdivision when he struck a parked car. This initial collision caused him to lose control of his vehicle and drive off the road striking numerous trees.

The younger brother was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. There was also another passenger in the vehicle but, thankfully, he and the driver only sustained minor injuries. The 18-year-old driver is now facing a felony DUI charge.

This is a tragic and unfortunate situation for all parties involved. The 18-year-old that has now found himself facing criminal charges is likely experiencing a wide variety of emotions. He is likely experiencing an emotional toll due to the loss of his brother. He may also be afraid and scared of what will come of the felony DUI charges.

In situations like this, it is often helpful for the individual facing charges to seek the assistance of a felony DUI defense attorney. There are serious penalties attached to individuals convicted of felony DUI offenses. An attorney may be able to relieve some of the difficulties the defendant is experiencing and potentially obtain a lesser punishment than was initially expected.
