South Carolina's DUI crackdown leads to more arrests

Since 2006, the state of South Carolina has been aggressively pursuing drivers that are traveling on the roads while their blood alcohol content is over the legal limit. The aggressive pursuit involved a no-tolerance program as well as education of residents and businesses. Authorities now say that these efforts have led to a five-year low in arrests involving drunk driving charges.

According to reports, in 2012 the town of Mount Pleasant recorded the lowest amount of DUI arrests in five years. In addition, the town recorded its lowest number of DUI crashes in six years. In the first six months of 2013, 126 drivers in the town have been charged with a crime and booked for suspected DUI. That number is on par with the rate of arrests in 2012.

A state grant funded the increased efforts in 2006 as that money allowed the police force to dedicate two individuals solely to stopping impaired drivers and aggressive drivers. In 2010 the state really got behind educating bars and bartenders on identifying over-served individuals and encouraging them to call a cab or a sober driver instead of driving themselves home.

Although these results are good news for authorities, they are not lifting their efforts to find drunk drivers traveling the roadways of South Carolina. When people find themselves facing DUI charges, it is important that they realize this is a serious situation that should not be taken lightly as the penalties that accompany a conviction can be painful. These penalties may include license suspension, monetary fines, a criminal record and more.

It is always a good idea for those facing accusations of drunk driving to understand their legal rights. There are defense strategies available that can help reduce penalties.
