South Carolina police officer charged with DUI after car accident

When an individual is driving under the influence of alcohol in South Carolina, police officers are usually the ones to issue criminal charges. However, this does not mean that police officers cannot also be charged with DUI. DUI charges can have a potentially severe impact on anyone's life. However, it is unfortunate, but true that they may have an even more severe impact on the life and reputation of a police officer.

A South Carolina police officer has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after an accident that occurred shortly before 1:00 in the morning. According to police reports, the officer was driving his personal vehicle when he was attempting to turn right and allegedly struck another vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. The police officer was charged with a single occurrence of DUI and taken to the Charleston County Jail.

Police officer or not, when an individual is charged with a crime for drunk driving it can be a very frightening situation. The potential consequences can have a life-changing negative impact. One of these life-changing impacts is an impact on the career and professional reputation of the charged individual. A conviction for DUI can mean the loss of a professional license or the loss of a job.

In the case of a police officer facing DUI charges, as is the situation here, it is very likely the charges will impact the individual's career in one way or another. This police officer may face suspension or, at the worst, his employment may be terminated. In order to prevent this undesired outcome, it may be helpful for the defendant to hire an experienced DUI defense attorney.

A DUI defense attorney will advocate for the defendant's rights and do their best to mitigate the negative impact that the charges and possible conviction will have on the livelihood of the defendant. South Carolina DUI defense attorneys are often able to obtain either a dismissal or reduction of charges for their clients.
