South Carolina man facing charges for four counts of felony DUI

As previous postings in this blog have discussed, all criminal charges that result from driving while under the influence of alcohol have the potential for severe penalties and should be taken very seriously. Sometimes, when a driver gets behind the wheel after consuming what is considered too much alcohol according to South Carolina state laws, a car accident may occur.

These accidents often result in misdemeanor drunk driving charges. However, depending upon the circumstances of the accident and resulting injuries, if any, the drunk driving charges could be heightened to a felony. This most often happens when another party dies or suffers severe bodily injury. After an accident that recently occurred in South Carolina, an alleged drunk driver is facing four felony DUI charges.

According to reports from the Greenville police department, the man was allegedly driving the wrong direction down a South Carolina highway shortly after 3:00 in the morning, which led to a collision with another vehicle. A woman drove the other vehicle and her three children were passengers. The collision led to the death of the woman. The three children suffered severe injuries. The man's four felony charges include one charge of driving while intoxicated causing death and three counts of driving while intoxicated leading to great bodily harm.

In cases such as this one, it is always helpful for the party facing the charges to enlist the assistance of an experienced felony DUI defense attorney in South Carolina. An attorney can potentially mitigate the nature of the potentially serious penalties. For example, an attorney may be able to get a felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, obtain an acquittal at trial, and successfully have the case dismissed or become victorious upon appeal.
