Many parents in South Carolina may find it difficult to help their children understand that many of the decisions they make from the beginning of their teenage years can impact the rest of their lives in a positive or negative manner; depending upon the nature of the decision and the resulting outcome. One decision that can unfortunately have a long-lasting negative impact on the life of a teenager is the decision to drive while intoxicated.

When a teen is charged with driving while intoxicated, it is important that the situation is handled very carefully. It was likely an honest mistake or temporary lapse in judgment that should not be allowed to impact them for years to come. Often times the best way to accomplish this goal is to involve an experienced South Carolina DUI defense attorney. A 17-year-old South Carolina teenager who was recently involved in a car accident that led to the death of two individuals is facing two counts of felony DUI charges. It is this very type of situation that needs to be handled in the appropriate manner to protect the future of the teenager.

According to accident reports, the crash occurred shortly before midnight. Police state that the vehicle driven by the 17-year-old, collided with another vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman who was also an expectant mother. The pregnant woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Although it is believed the woman was pregnant, the coroner was unable to confirm her pregnancy without performing an autopsy.

The 17-year-old also had an adult and two other teenagers riding with him in his vehicle. One of the teenagers also suffered fatal injuries as a result of the accident. The adult that was riding in the car was transported to a medical facility for treatment of their injuries. The teen driver was taken to a detention center and charged with two counts of felony DUI.

Although this teen may not have a prior record, if he is convicted of these charges he will then have multiple offenses on his record at a very young age. Having DUI convictions on a criminal record can impact an individual in a negative way for the remainder of their life. Therefore, it is always a good idea to seek the assistance of a DUI defense attorney to minimize these impacts on the life of the defendant.
