South Carolina's Sober or Slammer campaign underway

According to South Carolina authorities, December is a dangerous time to be traveling on the roadways by passenger vehicle. This is due largely to the holiday season that is now upon us. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety states that in 2012 there were 358 fatalities on the roads that were caused by drunk drivers. Fifty of those people died during the final weeks of the year.

In what they characterize as an effort to reduce the amount of drunk driving accidents, South Carolina authorities began their Sober or Slammer campaign on December 13. The Sober or Slammer program will send troopers and local law enforcement out to the roads of South Carolina to look for drunk drivers. Anyone whom they suspect may be driving under the influence of too much alcohol will likely wind up facing DUI charges.

South Carolina authorities have some specific strategies to target these alleged drunk drivers. They will be driving unmarked vehicles and they will have a majority of the roads covered including highways, interstates, secondary roads and even back roads. These tactics and the campaign itself may raise some red flags, however, especially when readers consider that statistics actually demonstrate that drunk driving fatalities are on the decline this year.

It is important for those South Carolina drivers facing criminal charges as the result of a campaign like this to remember that they are innocent until proven guilty and that they are also entitled to fair representation. It is always a good idea to consider the assistance of an experienced drunk driving defense attorney who can take the necessary steps to protect the rights of a defendant facing DUI charges.
