Clerk charged with selling minor alcohol before car accident

A previous posting in this blog discussed an accident in which a 20-year-old boy was driving and got into a car accident leaving his 19-year-old female passenger with serious injuries. The boy was charged with felony DUI. However, what South Carolina residents may not know is that this boy is not the only individual involved in this situation that may be facing charges for contributing to this tragic outcome.

After the accident and the filing of DUI charges against the boy, police began investigating the incident further. Because the boy that was driving the car with alcohol in his system was a minor, officers were trying to determine where he got the alcohol he had consumed.

According to reports, officers determined that the boy purchased a 25-ounce can of beer at a convenience store shortly before 10:00 the evening of the accident. Investigators also concluded that the boy allegedly purchased the beer without providing the clerk his driver's license. The police then wanted to determine the identity of the clerk that sold him the beer.

According to reports, a 23-year-old man was the clerk that sold the beer to the 20-year-old boy. The man was arrested and taken to a detention center where he is required to stay until he has a bond hearing. He has been cited with one count of selling wine or beer to an individual under the age of 21.

Being charged with a crime is a serious situation and can result in severe penalties. This development in the case could also impact the potential for penalties faced by the 20-year-old driver as well. Situations like this can quickly become very frightening and very complicated. Therefore, it is almost always helpful for any party facing criminal charges related to DUI to speak with a drunk driving defense attorney to help them understand their situation and the best strategies for defending their position.
