Fatal DUI accident occurrences declining in South Carolina

As previous postings in this blog have discussed, South Carolina authorities are constantly on the lookout for those that are traveling the roadways of the state while under the influence of alcohol. Numerous people are injured or die each year due to drunk driving accidents and authorities are trying to decrease the occurrence of these accidents, injuries and deaths. It appears that in many parts of the state these efforts have been successful.

In Spartanburg County, in upstate South Carolina, there has been a reduction in fatal crashes by 36 percent from last year. This is on par with the rate of reduction seen across the entire state. The state of South Carolina had recorded 576 fatal accidents as of Dec. 26 this year. That is less than the 688 that had been recorded within the same timeframe last year.

The state highway patrol will continue to partner with local law enforcement agencies to keep these numbers down through the remainder of the year, which includes the New Year's holiday. New Year's Eve is when the upstate area of South Carolina sees the highest number of drivers that are impaired due to alcohol consumption.

According to the Spartanburg police department, there are always two to three officers on the roads for late night DUI enforcement and that will not change throughout the remainder of 2012. If these officers see someone that they believe is under the influence of alcohol they will pull them over and they may issue drunk driving charges.

When a resident of South Carolina is charged with a crime for DUI the penalties can be severe if that charge is followed by a conviction. Even after someone is charged for drunk driving they still have rights that must not be violated and they are considered innocent until proven guilty. A careful defense strategy will make sure the defendant receives the appropriate representation to obtain the least punitive outcome possible.
