South Carolina ranks high among drunk driving charges

When one's state of residence makes a top 10 list, many people feel a sense of pride. Recently released statistics, however, rank South Carolina among the top states in a less prestigious list: places where drunk driving charges are common. Only seven other states have a higher incidence of drunk driving, leaving many in South Carolina to ponder how to make our roadways safer for all drivers .

People from all walks of life can find themselves facing charges of driving under the influence. In many cases, it is simply the result of an inability to accurately predict when one has passed the point during an evening beyond which driving is a bad idea. Because it is so difficult to recognize when a few drinks have passed the legal driving limit, reports of driving under the influence arrests span all social and economic groups.

Drivers can take a number of precautions to avoid becoming part of this unpleasant statistic. The first is to avoid consuming alcohol during any timeframe in which one might have to operate a motor vehicle. This can be easier said than done, but with the proper planning it is possible to arrange for a designated driver or a taxi ride. This once simple step can prevent a large volume of drunk driving charges, and also make the roadways safer for everyone.

For those in South Carolina who have found themselves facing criminal charges for driving under the influence, it is imperative to take quick and aggressive action. A drunk driving conviction has a number of negative consequences, including but not limited to fines, loss of one's driving privilege, probation and even jail time. Anyone can make an error in judgment, but the choices one makes following drunk driving charges will largely shape the eventual outcome.
