Drunk driving charges may be avoided by using a new service

A new service in South Carolina may be around for a long time. It's called CoPilot, and it is a driver service that caters to those who cannot drive due to insobriety. A person needing the service can use his or her smart phone to text in a request. Alternatively, it may fall on friends or others to see to it that one in need requests the service. All in all, the avoidance of injury, death and drunk driving charges is an outcome that seems well worth the effort.

One attraction of the service is that it not only gets the individual home, but it gets the person's car there too. Instead of leaving the vehicle behind after taking a cab, the service sends out two drivers so that the vehicle gets home with the customer. To prevent possible fears by customers that a stranger will be driving, the company says that it conducts extensive background checks on its drivers, making sure that they are responsible and well trained.

With a 16 percent increase in drunk-driving deaths in South Carolina reported by MADD for 2014, it is even more critical for people to take preventative measures. Additionally, driving when drinking portends harsh punishment under the criminal laws of the state. The possibility of avoiding drunk driving charges seems to be reason enough for using a service or obtaining a ride home.

DUI violations in South Carolina result in license suspensions and harsh criminal penalties, including possible jail sentences. If an innocent victim dies due to a drunk driving accident, the punishment to the perpetrator may call for several years of incarceration. For repeat offenders, the risks of incarceration and other intrusive punishment is progressively increased. For those who have received drunk driving charges, however, there remains also the absolute right to make sure that the arrest was legally executed and that the sentence, if any, will be fair and just within the confines of the law. Consequently, the choice of experienced DUI defense representation can be a key benefit to one who faces such charges.
