Woman charged with felony DUI in crash with trooper

A South Carolina woman is facing serious criminal charges in an accident in which a police chase killed one of her closest friends. The series of events that led to the woman's arrest and felony DUI charges are unusual, in that her actions may not have been responsible for the loss of life. The incident has left several families in grief, and with a lack of clarity as to how and why this tragic loss took place.

The crash occurred the day after Christmas, as the woman was driving to deliver a gift to a friend. Nearby, police were manning a drunk-driving checkpoint. When a driver failed to stop at that checkpoint, a state trooper began pursuing that vehicle. The trooper and the woman were involved in a crash at an intersection, and the vehicle that fled the checkpoint was able to get away.

At the time of the crash, the woman had a 22-year-old male passenger in her vehicle. That young man sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was rushed to an area hospital. He was unable to survive his injuries. The woman driving that vehicle was charged with DUI as well as failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

The woman has secured legal counsel, and a statement has been issued, underscoring the fact that the young woman was not the subject of the South Carolina police chase. In addition, the woman's attorney asserts that she was simply crossing through the intersection on a green traffic signal when the trooper crashed into her vehicle. As the felony DUI case moves forward, additional details may be made available. In the meanwhile, the family of the young man killed in the accident will begin moving through the various stages of grief.
