Councilman posts bond after DUI arrest

A Richland County councilman was released from jail after posting bond following a felony driving under the influence arrest. The man is being charged with felony DUI resulting from a motor vehicle accident over the weekend.

According to law enforcement, the accident occurred at approximately 7:45 pm. It was then that the man crashed into the rear of another vehicle.

As a result of the accident, the driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured. This person was transported to Palmetto Health Richland for examination and treatment.

Furthermore, the passenger in the other vehicle, as well as the councilman, were also injured in the accident. They were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

A judge set his bond at $25,000, allowing the man to secure his release after posting $2,500.

At this time, South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

The Richland County Council issued a statement, noting the following: "As law enforcement continues its investigation and as we gather more facts I want us all to extend our prayers and thoughts to the victims in this situation."

Making matters more complicated for the councilman is the fact that this is the second time he is facing charges in 2016. Earlier this year, he was charged with a failure to pay taxes for the years of 2012, 2013 and 2014. This led to a fine and three years' probation.

A DUI arrest is nothing to take lightly, as the end result can be time in jail, license suspension and a fine. It can also have an impact on your personal and professional life.
