2 on motorcycle killed by drunk driver

A 35-year old man was allegedly drunk behind the wheel when he crashed his 2005 Nissan Altima into the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Two people on the motorcycle were killed in the crash.

According to reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened very early in the morning, at about 2:45 a.m. It took place on State Highway 28, about a mile to the west of the town of Anderson and close to State Highway 24.

The man is accused of leaving the scene of the accident. When he went to court, he was apologetic, crying and saying he was sorry for what had happened. He said he hadn't intentionally left the crash scene, but that he hadn't even known he'd hit them or what had occurred.

Right now, his bail is set at $500,000. He's facing a pair of counts for a felony DUI in which a person was killed, and he's looking at two more counts for leaving a deadly accident.

The family of the two people who were killed -- a husband and wife, both in their mid 40s -- said they wouldn't show forgiveness at all since he didn't stop to help, accusing him of destroying the family.

The couple on the bike was only about a mile from their house. They were not wearing motorcycle helmets while riding.

As this story shows, simple DUI charges can get much more complex when accidents and other factors are involved. Considering the severity of a possible sentence, it's crucial for those who have been accused to know what rights and defense options they have.
