Boating under the influence is a very serious charge

As the warmer months of the year come to a close, people are likely going to head out to enjoy the waterways before the cold weather makes it uncomfortable. It is important for people who are heading out on boats and personal watercraft to remain sober if they are going to be operating the water-based vehicles. If you drink and boat, there is a chance that you could face boating under the influence charges.

Many people don't realize just how serious of an issue boating under the influence is. When it comes to fatal boating accidents, alcohol was involved in 16 percent of the cases. That harrowing statistic should really hammer home the importance of remaining sober.

Another thing that you might not realize is that you can face criminal charges and have your boat impounded if you are boating under the influence. Just like if you were in a motor vehicle, the law sets the limit for blood alcohol concentration at .08 percent for leisure boaters.

Interestingly, you can face a BUI charge even if the watercraft you are in doesn't have a motor. This means that if you are drinking a beer and canoeing or kayaking, you can be arrested. We know that is rather shocking.

We understand that you might have only had a few drinks to celebrate the wonderful summer and usher in the fall. If you are facing charges for boating while under the influence, you need to plan out your defense right away. We are here to help you plan out your defense and execute it when necessary.
