Drugged driving and drunk driving have a lot in common

The fairly recent news of Tiger Woods' arrest brings up some important points that everyone should know about drunk driving charges. Many people think that someone who is arrested for drunk driving went out on a drinking binge and then made the irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel. This isn't necessarily the case.

In some instances, a person can be arrested for drunk driving based off of using prescription medications. Certain prescriptions have the possibility of impairing your cognitive and mental capabilities in a manner that is similar to alcohol. When you take these medications and then drive, you might be driving impaired without even realizing it.

When the issue is that you have taken prescription drugs, you should understand that you might have options that don't exist with an alcohol-based charge. Exploring this option might help you to decide what to do about your defense.

Another thing that you should know is that you likely don't have to be driving to get a drunk driving charge. Instead, being in a parked vehicle in the driver's seat and with the keys in your possession might be enough to have to face drunk driving charges. It all depends on how the situation is perceived.

Finally, how you handle requests for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) testing can impact your future. You might be able to get away with refusing a field sobriety test, but you likely won't be able to get away with refusing to take a breath or blood test. Although, you can probably let the officer know which test you would be willing to take.
