South Carolina man charged with lawnmower DUI

Charleston residents may not know that it is possible to get a DUI on a number of motor vehicles, not only cars, trucks and boats. A man from the Wellford, South Carolina, area who is currently facing drunk driving charges illustrates this fact.

According to a news report, the 56-year-old Upstate man was arrested Monday evening for allegedly driving his lawnmower while intoxicated. Police reportedly observed the man driving the lawnmower on the busy U.S. Highway 29, outside of Spartanburg, weaving in and out of traffic from the shoulder.

After he was pulled over, the arresting officer noticed that he smelled like alcohol and was slurring his speech. It is unclear whether a field sobriety or blood alcohol content test was conducted.

Officers said the man was driving home to Lyman after visiting the neighboring town of Sartex. The officers believe that he may have driven down the highway for several miles before he was stopped by police.

He has now been charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and has been released from jail in the aftermath of the arrest.

While this DUI case may seem a bit amusing to some, it is important to remember that it is very serious for the accused. DUI charges–no matter the vehicle or circumstances–are taken seriously by prosecutors here in South Carolina. In order to ensure one’s rights are protected and the case is resolved in the best way possible, it is often important to seek DUI defense counsel.
