South Carolina Police Officer Arrested On Suspicion of DUI

A South Carolina police officer was recently accused of DUI after crashing her Charleston squad car. The officer was driving shortly after midnight earlier this month when she lost control and wrecked the vehicle. Unfortunately, she sustained injuries in the accident and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Compounding her injuries, the officer may now face tough drunk driving charges and has been put on administrative leave without pay.

All DUI cases are difficult, but some are tougher than others. Some things that set difficult DUI cases apart from the rest involve accidents that results in serious bodily harm or death to another, failure of field sobriety tests or a DUI charge that puts one's job at immediate risk. But even those facing tough drunk driving charges should not be completely discouraged.

DUI charges always have the potential to result in severe outcomes. These outcomes may include monetary fines, suspension or revocation of a driver's license and a tarnished reputation personally and professionally. For this officer, the situation is especially concerning as it appears the charges could affect her livelihood.

When situations like this arise, it is important to have a strong DUI defense. The Breathalyzers and sobriety tests that authorities use to determine BAC are not the last word in blood alcohol measurements. These machines have a reputation of providing false results in numerous situations. An experienced DUI defense attorney will understand the exact situations when these tests have a likelihood of providing inaccurate outcomes.

In addition, those who are accused of crimes are still entitled to have their constitutional rights upheld. It is important that defendants do not let the authorities or the prosecution intimidate them and violate their rights. If these rights are violated during or after an arrest, this can also lead to a mitigation of consequences.
