Drunk driving charges result after roadside workers are injured

When drivers in South Carolina are traveling through construction zones it is very important for them to keep an eye out for roadside construction workers. If they do not exercise the appropriate care and accidentally strike a worker, they may be faced with a civil or criminal charge, depending upon the situation. For example, a South Carolina driver that recently struck two roadside construction workers is facing drunk driving charges as a result of the accident.

According to emergency dispatchers, a call was received during afternoon informing them of the accident. According to reports, the 54-year-old driver ran through the orange barrels that were separating the workers from the vehicles traveling down the road. The man told officers that he fell asleep behind the wheel of his car.

Both of the workers were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries. The driver was charged with driving under the influence. This is the third time this year that a South Carolina driver has been charged with a crime involving driving under the influence after striking a roadside construction worker.

A drunk driving charge should never be considered a mere traffic violation. On the contrary, a conviction for drunk driving can be accompanied by hefty penalties and, therefore, these types of charges should be taken very seriously.

Under South Carolina law, all drunk drivers face the possibility of an automatic license suspension. The suspension term ranges anywhere from six months to a permanent revocation depending upon the number of DUI offenses on the driver's past record. Outside of license suspension drivers could face other penalties that include monetary fines, rehabilitation programs and much more.

However, no matter how hopeless and difficult the situation may seem, there are experienced drunk driving defense attorneys in South Carolina that have a proven record of success in obtaining reduced or dismissed charges and less severe penalties in these types of cases. Those that are facing these types of charges would be well served by scheduling a consultation with one of these experienced attorneys.
