Driver faces DUI after alleged crash with South Carolina deputy

Everybody makes mistakes from time to time. However, sometimes these mistakes can result in serious legal problems. One common mistake by motorists is driving a vehicle while being under the influence of alcohol. For one motorist, this is exactly what happened in a recent accident that resulted in a DUI charge in South Carolina.

The incident happened when a 33-year-old motorist crashed his vehicle into one operated by a Sheriff's deputy on U.S. Hwy 221. The crash occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. in late August. Apparently, the motorist's vehicle crossed over the center line on the highway into traffic heading in the opposite direction. The man's vehicle collided head-on with a marked SUV driven by the deputy.

The deputy suffered injuries, including a concussion and whiplash. The motorist was arrested on the scene. He was later charged with a first time DUI offense. The man will now be facing a judge in a South Carolina criminal courtroom. The judge will ultimately decide the fate of the man facing criminal charges, which could result in possible jail time if prosecutors secure a conviction.

The man has a legal right to defend himself against the DUI accusations. As with anyone else accused of a crime, he may put government prosecutors to their proof and demand that they actually prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. He is also entitled to explore the possibility of a plea agreement involving lesser charges and/or a reduced sentence in exchange for a plea of guilty. Moving forward, he can then decide how to proceed with a view toward choosing the defense strategy that offers him the best chance to achieve an optimal result.
