DUI charges for driver that allegedly initiated chase

Multiple DUI offenses have potentially serious consequences for those accused of them. A South Carolina man was recently arrested for what was apparently his third charge for drunk driving, but authorities say that he first led them on a chase. He is now facing multiple DUI charges.

The driver was initially pulled over for what may have been an otherwise routine traffic stop, although the reasons behind it are not entirely clear. Upon the driver being asked to supply his information, the officer who initiated the stop claims that the driver took off, initiating a chase. Multiple highway patrol vehicles became involved.

During the course of the chase, two patrol cars were struck. Ultimately, law enforcement made the call to collide with the fleeing driver in order to stop the chase. Although the driver escaped the collision uninjured, one of the troopers chasing him ended up suffering an injury and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. He was later released.

The driver's license may have still been suspended from one of his prior DUI charges, as he has been accused of driving on a suspended license in addition to DUI, cocaine possession and various other allegations. While conviction on a drunk driving charge can carry significant penalties by itself, multiple offenses can make the stakes that much more serious. This South Carolina man may find it beneficial, alongside his counsel, to carefully review the formal charges and any relevant evidence that the authorities may have collected. Taking this step often helps those facing serious charges determine how to proceed. Whether this means fighting the charges to his or her fullest extent throughout the entirety of a trial court proceeding, or seeking to enter into a plea deal for various benefits, the goal is typically to garner the most favorable outcome possible.
