Hitting a bicyclist results in DUI charge for McColl councilman

A McColl, South Carolina, Town Councilman was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk Saturday, Feb. 4, after striking a 38-year-old bicyclist later that evening with his car. The victim was transported to a Scotland county hospital and treated for minor injuries before being released.

The accident resulting in DUI charges against the man occurred on High Street in McColl around 11:10 p.m. In responding to the councilman's crash with the biker, the city's police officer noted both a large crack to the man's windshield as well as damage to his bumper.

When asked how the damage had occurred, the man responded that he believed someone had thrown something at his vehicle. The officer, though, could smell a strong scent of alcohol on the man's breath and asked if the man would consent to a field sobriety test.

By 4 a.m., the councilman had been arrested and charged with DUI and booked into Marlboro County Jail. He was released later that day on his own personal recognizance bond.

Given the man's elected status as well McColl Town Council's membership in the Municipal Association of South Carolina, officials were required to turn the active investigation over to the South Carolina Highway Patrol for further handling.

If you or someone you know has been charged with DUI, it's important to know that any omissions to law enforcement can adversely jeopardize your case. Aside from that, a conviction can tarnish your ability to secure employment as well. That being said, the advice of a experienced DUI can help protect your rights.
