26-year-old woman arrested for DUI after driving into police car

A 26-year-old woman was arrested and accused of being too drunk to drive, in addition to driving into the back of a police sport utility vehicle after losing control of her car. The incident happened during early morning hours on a recent Saturday.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the woman lost control of her car, ran off the road, went through a ditch and hit the back of the police vehicle with an officer inside it. The officer was rushed to a local emergency room by medical responders to receive treatment for minor injuries. He was released later that day.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the allegedly intoxicated woman who hit the officer's sport utility vehicle. Instead of being rushed to the hospital, the driver was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center where she was booked on charges of driving under the influence.

A first-time DUI-related arrest can come with the threat of criminal punishments for those who are convicted of drunk driving. However, a first-time DUI offender will not typically be sentenced to jail time. That said, if an injurious car accident leads to a DUI arrest -- no matter if it is a first time or second time offense -- the charges and potential consequences become more severe.

Drivers who are convicted of causing injury with a motor vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance could spend years behind bars. For this reason, South Carolina residents accused of such crimes will want to approach their DUI defenses with caution and care.
